The Independent School on Monday announced Milt Dougherty as its new head of school.
Dougherty has 18 years of experience as a superintendent in central Kansas public schools, including USD 444 in Little River, according to a news release from the school.
He is president and owner of American International Prep Academy, a company that works with foreign partners to provide online high school courses for students wanting to earn a diploma from schools in the United States. He also owns Milt Dougherty and Associates, an education and leadership consulting firm.
Dougherty will begin his role July 1, replacing Mary Dickerson, who announced in January that she would move out of state at the end of this school year.
Dougherty earned his doctorate of education from Kansas State University and master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Fort Hays State University. He was recognized as an Apple Distinguished Educator in 2003 and chosen as an eSchool News Top 10 U.S. Tech Savvy Superintendent.
“We are extremely pleased to announce Dr. Dougherty’s commitment to The Independent School,” said Greg Sevier, chairman of the school’s board of trustees, in a written statement Monday. “His leadership skills, focus on technology-based learning, and his strategic vision and vast educational experiences make him a great fit for this key position.”
The Independent School, 8317 E. Douglas, is a private school specializing in college preparatory education for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.
