A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of sexually molesting five girls – the oldest of whom is 8 – over a period spanning years, authorities said Monday.

Steven Walters was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail late Friday night after being questioned at the Exploited and Missing Child Unit, records show. A police document indicates the parents of the children were aware of the alleged abuse.

“That’s something we are investigating: whether there was active knowledge that it was going on or whether it was recently uncovered,” EMCU Lt. Chris Bannister said.

Two of the girls are 8 years old, Bannister said. The others are 6, 5 and 3. Walters is an acquaintance of the parents, Bannister said.

Two of the children named as victims were placed in protective custody, one was taken to Wesley Medical Center for an examination, and two were left in the custody of their parents, according to a police document.

The alleged abuse “happened at a number of different places and times,” Bannister said. “It seemed to be going on for an extended period. It was chronic in nature.”

Walters is being held on $250,000 bond.
