An 18-year-old senior who brought a shotgun to Warrensburg High School Friday committed suicide off campus when cornered by police.

The events started at about 7:45 when school employees saw the armed teen in a green Ford Explorer in the parking lot of the high school at 1411 S. Ridgview Drive in Warrensburg, Mo., according to police.

The employees reported it to district offices which called police and placed the high school on lockdown. Before police arrived, the teen drove away. No shots were fired outside the school, said Scott Patrick, superintendent of Warrensburg Schools.

About 5 minutes later, Warrensburg officers spotted the Explorer at Missouri Highway DD as it turned north onto Maguire Street.

The officers got the teen to pull the vehicle over behind a car wash at Maguire and Clark Street, near the University of Central Missouri.

While officers waited for other officers to arrive, they heard a shotgun blast in the Explorer.

Once other officers arrived, they approached the vehicle and found the teen dead from a single self-inflicted wound to the head, according to police.

No other students were harmed during the incident.

“The most important part is that students and staff are safe,” Patick said. “The school employees did what they are supposed to do. They possibly saved some very bad things from happening by reporting the things they saw.”

The Missouri Highway Patrol and the University of Central Missouri Police assisted Warrensburg police.
