Sedgwick County honored a longtime dietitian and research instructor with its Doren Frederickson Commitment to Public Health Award on Wednesday.
The award to Judy Johnston fell during National Public Health Week.
Johnston began her career as a clinical dietitian in 1973 at Via Christi Hospital St. Francis and later became director of nutrition services at what is now Via Christi Riverside Medical Center, a news release from the county said. She has held adjunct faculty positions at Wichita State University, Kansas State University and the University of Kansas.
Johnston also directed the Kansas Leadership to Encourage Activity and Nutrition (LEAN) Coalition and was a project director for the Center for Breast Cancer Survivorship in Wichita.
Never miss a local story.
She recently was involved with the Healthy Congregations in Action project, funded by the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund and involving 30 churches statewide, a news release said. She is a research instructor at the KU School of Medicine in Wichita.
The award is named for Wichita physician Doren Frederickson, who was the Sedgwick County Health Department’s health officer from 2002 until his death in 2008.
