James Thomas, head of Thomas Energy, has filed to run as a Republican for the House 83rd District representing portions of east Wichita.
The seat is held by Carolyn Bridges, a Democrat who was elected in 2012.
Thomas said in a written statement that he would “strive for smaller state government, greater individual liberty, freer markets and fiscal responsibility.” Thomas also said he “would push for a fairer, flatter tax system and for taking steps to ensure that Kansas can meet its long-term pension obligations.”
He also said he “is concerned by the activism of the judicial branch and increased spending on schools not yielding better performance on state assessment exams.”
Thomas, who lives in Eastborough, said he founded Thomas Energy, a petroleum land services company, 20 years ago and still runs it. He also is a director of the Wichita Symphony Society.
Thomas is married and has three children.
