The city’s airport naming committee has been cleared by District Attorney Marc Bennett of two potential open meetings violations.
In a Tuesday afternoon news release, Bennett said the committee held meetings Dec. 17 and Jan. 22 at City Arts without prior notification to the public. But since no Wichita media outlet made a written request for notification of those meetings, no violation of the Kansas Open Meetings Act occurred, Bennett ruled.
Bennett said an investigation by his office also found no written requests by Wichita media for blanket notification of all city meetings, although the city generally provides such notice.
“The City states as a matter of practice it routinely provides notice of meetings open to the public to all local media outlets,” Bennett said in a news release. “Such a practice is commendable, but a lapse in its execution does not equate to an open meetings violation.”
The naming committee was formed Nov. 5 by the Wichita City Council. The city self-reported the potential violations on March 6 to Bennett’s office.
