The Wichita Eagle is beginning a tradition to honor area high school juniors who have excelled in a multitude of areas.

Those areas include community service, academics, extracurricular and character-building activities. The Soaring Student Award is aimed at recognizing the area’s outstanding young men and women.

Any person in the Wichita area can nominate a student for the Soaring Student Award, including educators, business people, parents and other students.

Nominations are being accepted for high school juniors who live in Sedgwick, Butler, Harvey and Sumner counties. Students who are nominated must complete the final application to the program.

A group made up of educators and community partners will review each application and designate the top students as Soaring Students.

Students will be recognized and honored in a Wichita Eagle special section on May 11.

Additionally, every Soaring Student and two guests will be a guest of honor at the Soaring Student Awards Banquet on May 8 on the campus of Wichita State University.

The deadline for nominations is March 30.
