A Kansas City woman who fled sentencing 18 years ago for payroll check fraud was apprehended Friday on a houseboat in the Florida Keys.
Michelle Singleton, 66, told authorities she had been living under a different name since fleeing Kansas City in 1996.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office in Florida, the Secret Service recently received information that Singleton was possibly living in Key West under the assumed name of Catherine Harris.
A check of computer records showed a woman by the name of Harris was living at an address in the Hilton Haven neighborhood of Key West, authorities said. A comparison of driver license photos confirmed the two were the same person.
Agents went to the houseboat Friday and found Singleton on board. She attempted to show them identification for Harris, but accidentally dropped a social security card and birth certificate for Singleton.
She then acknowledged she had gotten the Florida driver’s license about a month after leaving Kansas City. She also told the agents she was in the process of trying to sell the houseboat so she could move to the Dominican Republic.
