Through traffic on South Meridian will be closed for three weeks starting Thursday so a storm-sewer drainage project can be completed.
Traffic will detour to Southwest Boulevard at Harry and Pawnee, city of Wichita officials said. Local traffic on Meridian will be open from Esthner and May streets for access to residential areas.
Access to area businesses will be maintained. Orient also will close at Meridian until the work is finished.
The work addresses drainage improvements for Meridian from Pawnee to McCormick and will take storm water to the Arkansas River. Total cost of the project is $8.5 million.
With the drainage issues corrected, the city plans to start improving Meridian in 2015. A separate project calls for widening Meridian to five lanes from Pawnee to McCormick.
