A 13-year-old boy suffered critical internal injuries when he was riding on a truck hood, fell off and was run over, and the woman driving the truck has been arrested on suspicion of child endangerment, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.
The boy remained in critical condition but was improving, sheriff’s Capt. Greg Pollock said Wednesday.
The office gave this account:
At 1:39 p.m. Monday, deputies were sent to the area of 4900 S. Elmhurst, in the Oaklawn neighborhood, for an unknown call for EMS. At the scene, deputies were told that a 13-year-old boy had been run over by a car and was taken to a hospital.
Deputies found the victim at an area hospital; his guardians weren’t there.
Investigators learned that the boy had been riding on the hood of a 38-year-old woman’s pickup and that he fell off and was run over, the office said. The woman "dropped the victim off at the hospital and left to contact the victim’s mother," the office said in a statement.
When the woman returned to the hospital, she was arrested and booked into jail for three warrants and on suspicion of aggravated endangerment of a child and aggravated battery, the office said.
The boy remained in critical condition with internal injuries.
Investigators will present the case to prosecutors to determine whether charges will be filed.
Apparently, the woman lives in the neighborhood, and as she was driving home, the 13-year-old and a 15-year-old friend jumped on the hood of the black Chevy pickup and rode, Mattingly said. The two teens knew the woman, he said.
