Sunny skies, light winds, temperatures teasing 50 – Wichita has been waiting a while for a day this nice.

Thawing will hit a new gear on Thursday as temperatures climb well above freezing today in southern Kansas. Forecasters say even the winds will be mild, staying in the single digits out of the southwest.

Overnight lows will only dip to the upper 30s, with skies staying mostly clear. Winds will switch to the north and become gusty on Friday, at times approaching 30 miles an hour.

But highs will hit the 50s under partly sunny skies, and the weekend should see highs in the upper 50s to low 60s under partly sunny skies. That will seem utterly tropical after February’s frigid first half.
