A man who tried to rob a Dollar General in east Wichita on Monday night left empty-handed and was then arrested by arriving officers after he fled the building, police said.
The 46-year-old man came into the store at 2020 E. 21st St. at about 8:30 p.m. Monday and pulled out a gun, saying it was a robbery and demanding cash, Lt. Doug Nolte said. But he then left the store through a back door.
“Something spooked him off,” Nolte said. “He ended up running out of the business. I don’t know if he saw officers approaching the business or what.”
Officers were close by when the 911 call went out reporting the robbery, Nolte said, and they saw the suspect come out of the Dollar General. They ran after him and caught him after a short chase.
Investigators are now looking into whether the same suspect committed other recent robberies at Dollar General stores around town.
“We’ve had several, but I don’t know if they’re connected yet,” Nolte said.
