He was running back to his red truck after allegedly pulling off the latest in a series of QuikTrip robberies — including three in a span of just a few minutes.
What the 21-year-old man didn’t realize, however, was that he was running right toward a Wichita police officer and a Sedgwick County deputy who were waiting for him at 8080 E. Pawnee early on Saturday morning.
“The suspect did not see the police vehicles there” near his truck, Lt. Doug Nolte said. When he finally spotted the law enforcement officers, “he slipped and fell” on the snow and ice, making it easy for the officers to apprehend him.
The man is suspected of robbing the QT at 5602 E. Harry at 4:20 a.m. Saturday and the QT at 1620 S. Webb Road at 4:24 a.m., Nolte said. The clerk spotted the red Chevy truck the suspect left in from the Webb Road store and gave that detail to the 911 operator.
An officer had a hunch the robber might try to hit the QT at 2106 S. Rock Road next and headed that direction, Nolte said. He spotted the red truck in the 8000 block of East Pawnee and checked it. No one was inside. He and a sheriff’s deputy providing back-up waited not far from the truck, and as they were waiting a 911 operator reported that the QT on South Rock Road had just been robbed.
That’s when the 21-year-old suspect came around the corner and approached his truck, Nolte said. He was booked into jail on suspicion of five counts of robbery.
In each incident, the robber entered the store, announced it was a robbery and demanded money from the register. No weapon was ever seen or suggested, Nolte said.
