Wichita State No. 4, KU No. 7 in AP poll

Wichita State remained No. 4 in the Associated Press men’s basketball top 25 and No. 2 in the coaches poll.

Wichita State remained No. 4 in the Associated Press men’s basketball top 25 and No. 2 in the coaches poll.

It is WSU’s third week in that spot in the AP poll. They are No. 2 in the coaches poll for a second week.

The Shockers (25-0) trail No. 1 Syracuse, No. 2 Arizona and No. 3 Florida, all of whom went 2-0 last week. WSU, which won at Indiana State and Northern Iowa, received 1,445 points to trail Florida’s 1,477. The previous week, Florida totaled 1,482 points to WSU’s 1,447.

Kansas (18-5) moved up one spot to No. 7. Creighton, which lost at Saint John’s on Sunday, dropped six spots to No. 18.

In the coaches poll, administered by USA Today, WSU received 744 points to No. 1 Syracuse’s 800. Kansas moved up two spots to No. 7. Kansas State is two spots from the top 25 with 38 points.

WSU’s No. 4 ranking is its highest in the AP poll since it spent one week at No. 2, in the Dec. 29, 1981 AP poll. During that month, it also peaked at No. 4, spending three weeks there, in the coaches poll administered at that time by the UPI.

The Shockers ascended to No. 1 in both polls in the Dec. 15, 1964 voting. After a loss to No. 2 Michigan, WSU dropped to No. 2 in both polls, where it stayed for two weeks.
