Infant in critical condition after near-drowning

Two young children were placed in protective custody by police Thursday after they learned one of them was left unattended in a bath and was found floating face-down in the water.

The mother of the children brought the 8-month-old girl to Via Christi Hospital St. Joseph at about 3 p.m. on Thursday, Wichita police Lt. Doug Nolte said. The 28-year-old woman said she was giving the infant and her 2-year-old brother a bath at their nearby home when she stepped out of the bathroom for just a minute.

When she returned, the infant was face-down in the water and unresponsive. The girl was transferred to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis, Nolte said, where she is in critical condition and has water in her lungs.

When officers went to the house to investigate, Nolte said, they found living conditions that raised concerns about the welfare of the young children. They were placed into protective custody pending an investigation by the Exploited and Missing Child Unit.

No arrests have been made in the case, Nolte said.
