Sedgwick County Commissioner Jim Skelton lauded the city of Derby on Wednesday for excellent city services as he presented the chairman’s award to its leaders and residents.

Skelton led his last meeting as chairman of the board of commissioners for 2013. One of the last actions for board chairmen is to give out a chairman’s award.

Skelton noted that Derby kept its offices open later to accommodate residents without costing more and offers curbside recycling, something he said he wished he had in Wichita. Skelton’s district covers the southeastern part of Wichita and Derby.

Elected in 2010, Skelton, a former Wichita City Council member, has a challenger for his next term. Rep. Jim Howell, R-Derby, has filed for the District 5 seat on the commission.
