Wichita State men’s basketball is back in the top 10 of the Associated Press poll.
The Shockers (12-0) moved up one spot to No. 10 in Monday’s poll of writers and broadcasters. It is WSU’s highest rank since No. 8 in the Dec. 19, 2006, poll. WSU received 981 points from 64 voters.
In the coaches poll, WSU moved up one spot to No. 8, getting 551 votes from a panel of 32 coaches. Kansas is No. 16, up two spots, in the AP poll. The Jayhawks (8-3) are No. 16 in the coaches poll.
The Shockers first appeared in the AP poll’s top 10 on Dec. 26, 1961. That team spent one week in the top 10, but the Shockers quickly returned and became a regular in the coming seasons. They spent 32 weeks during the 1962-63, 1963-64 and 1964-65 seasons in the top 10. WSU peaked at No. 1 on Dec. 15, 1964, spending one week atop the poll.
In 2006, WSU debuted in the AP poll at No. 24 on Nov. 21 with a 3-0 record that included a win at George Mason. It moved to No. 10 in the Dec. 5 poll, following a win at No. 15 Syracuse. The Shockers peaked at No. 8, spending two weeks there, as their unbeaten start to the season reached 9-0. Four straight losses dropped WSU out of the poll on Jan. 2, 2007.
Early honored — WSU senior Cleanthony Early earned Missouri Valley Conference player of the week honors.
Early, a 6-foot-8 forward, averaged 21 points and 7.5 rebounds in wins over Alabama and North Carolina Central. He scored a season-high 26 at Alabama, making 7 of 11 shots and all of his free throws.
Illinois State junior Daishon Knight earned newcomer of the week honors.
