A fire heavily damaged a south Wichita bakery Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
Workers found smoke coming from a utility closet at the Banana Bakery at 3205 E. 31st South shortly after 3:15 p.m., Fire Capt. Stuart Bevis said. They opened the closet door and discovered fire next to the water heater.
The fire grew rapidly and spread into the dining area, Bevis said, but employees and customers evacuated the store safely. The fire caused an estimated $250,000 in damage to the building and its contents.
Investigators say the fire was caused by storing combustibles too close to the water heater. No injuries were reported.
