Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives.

For a complete list of You Oughta Know columns, go to www.kansas.com/oughta.

The record: Media and arrest reports from the Wichita Police Department.

Why you’d want it: To read about crimes that occurred on a particular day and to see who police arrested.

Where you get it: Go to the city’s website, www.wichita.gov. From the “Government” tab, click on the “Police” link. Click on “About Us” and then on “ Public Information.” You will find media and arrest reports.

How much the record will cost: The information is free.
