Wichita police on Monday confirmed that one of the two men wounded in a deadly shoot-out at a house on North Holyoke has been jailed following his release from a local hospital.
Dijon L. Thomas, 20, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree felony murder Friday at 550 N. Hillside, which is the address for Wesley Medical Center. Thomas was hit in the leg during an exchange of gunfire that erupted during what police have described as an attempted robbery at 1452 N. Holyoke, Capt. Rusty Leeds confirmed Monday.
Paul Danny Khmabounheuang, who was in town from Arkansas visiting a relative, was shot once in the head and pronounced dead at the scene. Thomas was found just south of 13th on Holyoke with a gunshot wound to the leg, Leeds told media the day of the shooting.
He claimed he was just walking along the street when he was hit by a bullet, but officers followed his blood trail to the house at 1452 N. Holyoke, where the front door was open and they could see a body inside, police have said. Thomas was taken to Wesley Medical Center for treatment.
Never miss a local story.
On Saturday, jail logs showed Thomas was being held in the Sedgwick County Jail’s clinic. He was booked at 5:08 p.m. Friday and has a $500,000 bond on the murder charge. He is also being held on $25,000 bond on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance after prior convictions in a different case, jail records show.
Thomas was charged Monday with possession of marijuana after a prior conviction. Detectives have yet to present evidence to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office in the death of Khmabounheuang, spokesman Dan Dillon said.
Police have said four men let into the house near 13th and Hillside tried to rob Khmabounheuang of cash, drugs or both. Two of the men were shot – one in the leg and one in the abdomen – during an exchange of gunfire in which Khmabounheuang was killed. Both were taken to Wesley Medical Center in critical condition for treatment, where they were under armed guard.
A hospital operator on Saturday said a 19-year-old injured during the exchange had been upgraded to fair condition. He was found with a gunshot wound to the abdomen near the 4900 block of East Harry after police responded to a shooting call in the area about 10 minutes later. A vehicle found at the address, that of Chalet Apartments, matched the description of the vehicle used by the suspects in the robbery attempt on Holyoke.
Two suspects who were not hit by gunfire and ran from the house remained unaccounted for late Monday afternoon, Capt. Brent Allred said.
Khmabounheuang was the 15th homicide victim of the year in Wichita.
