Hutchinson man found dead at Cheney Lake

A 31-year-old Hutchinson man who had gone canoeing at Cheney Lake Sunday was found dead early Monday morning, the Reno County Sheriff’s Office said.

A 31-year-old Hutchinson man who had gone canoeing at Cheney Lake Sunday was found dead early Monday morning, the Reno County Sheriff’s Office said.

Foul play is not suspected in the death of Sheldon Martin, sheriff’s officials reported on the department’s Facebook page. According to family and friends, Martin had gone to the lake Sunday morning to canoe.

Family members began to look for him when he had not returned by 5 p.m. They called for assistance when they found his vehicle at the lake. Kansas Wildlife and Parks employees and an airplane from the Kansas Highway Patrol joined the search.

A small canoe was found at 2:30 a.m. Monday along the shoreline in the area of Pretty Prairie Road and Mayfield Road, authorities said. Martin’s body was found at about 4 a.m. in that same area. He was still wearing his lifejacket.

An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death.
