Police are investigating why a 58-year-old man on a motorcycle crashed into a parked truck in south Wichita Sunday night.

The rider, Kevin S. Newman, died later at Via Christi Hospital St. Francis, Lt. Joe Schroeder said. He was not wearing a helmet and was ejected from his 2005 Harley-Davidson by the collision.

The collision occurred at about 8:30 p.m. in the 2200 block of South Santa Fe. That’s a residential neighborhood southeast of Broadway and Mount Vernon.

“At this point we don’t know why” Newman hit the pickup, Schroeder said.

There were no other drivers involved in the incident and no obvious signs of impairment for Newman, he said. The pickup was legally parked.

Newman is the fourth person killed in a motorcycle crash this year in Wichita, statistics show. There have now been 26 collisions that have killed 29 people in Wichita in 2013, Schroeder said.

That compares to 21 deaths in 21 collisions by this point in 2012, including four motorcycle fatalities.
