Four children are in protective custody and police are investigating after a neighbor found a 4-year-old boy wandering early Saturday morning outside, authorities said.
The child was found just before 3:30 a.m. Saturday in the 1400 block of North Volutsia, Lt. Doug Nolte said. That’s near 13th and Oliver.
The neighbor took the child to his home and discovered three other very young boys — two 1-year-olds and an infant — alone in the home. The neighbor then called 911.
Upon investigation, Nolte said, police discovered the 24-year-old mother of the boys had left at around 5 p.m. on Friday and hadn’t returned by the time the oldest boy was found wandering outside.
“I don’t know where the adult went or what the circumstances were,” Nolte said.
The Exploited and Missing Child Unit has been called into the case. No arrests have been made.
