A motorist pulled over on the Kellogg bridge over McLean on Monday morning and jumped over the side, killing himself, police said.
The man’s wife, also in the vehicle, called emergency dispatchers, police Sgt. Troy Nedbalek said.
The man, 44, was pronounced dead at the scene, Nedbalek said. The man landed on the bike path on the west side of the river along McLean.
The incident occurred a little before 11:20 a.m.
At least one other motorist saw the man jump, he said.
A language barrier affected some of the preliminary investigation, Nedbalek said. He gave this account:
The couple were having a discussion when the man pulled their vehicle over to the shoulder of the westbound lanes of Kellogg at the bridge over McLean. The man, who reportedly suffered from mental illness, got out of the vehicle, walked over to the side and jumped from the bridge, a drop of a little over 40 feet. His wife, still in the vehicle, got out, looked over the side and called 911.
The incident unfolded quickly, Nedbalek said. Officials are treating it as a suicide.
Police at the scene closed northbound lanes of McLean near the bridge and closed the outside, westbound lane of Kellogg.
