Missouri Southern assistant coach killed in theater shooting

Authorities say a Missouri Southern State University employee was shot in the parking lot of a Joplin movie theater Friday night and later died.

Authorities say a Missouri Southern State University employee was shot in the parking lot of a Joplin movie theater Friday night and later died.

A Joplin Police Department news release says 39-year-old Jeffery L. Bruner is in custody. The Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office will review paperwork before filing any charges.

Officers were called about 9:50 p.m. Friday to the Regal Northstar Stadium 14 theater near Northpark Mall. Bruner was arrested shortly after and the male victim was taken to a hospital, where he died.

According a release on the university’s website, the school is “mourning the loss of Assistant Football Coach Derek Moore.

“Moore passed away from injuries received last night in a shooting outside a local movie theatre,” the release said.

Moore, 37, was in his first year with the Lions as offensive line coach. Moore previously coached for three seasons at Western Illinois University.

“We are stunned and deeply saddened by this tragic incident, and our prayers are with Derek’s family,” said MSSU interim president Alan Marble, in the release. “We are ensuring that our employees and students have the emotional support they need during this difficult time.”

MSSU said Homecoming activities were canceled, and the football game would be rescheduled.

Police spokesman Lt. Matt Stewart told KOAM-TV that authorities believe the victim was targeted.
