Authorities are investigating whether a 15-year-old girl found in south Wichita over the weekend may be a victim of sex trafficking.

The girl’s mother reported that she was with an older man and had been making suicidal statements, according to a police report. The man had rented a room for the girl at the Starlight Motel, 6345 E. Kellogg.

Officers who went to the motel Saturday night did not find her there, said Lt. Jeff Weible of the Wichita/Sedgwick County Exploited and Missing Child Unit. But they learned the girl could be found at a residence in the 1900 block of East 47th Street South.

The girl was found there with seven adults, Weible said, along with indications “there was additional abuse going on.”

The girl was taken to Via Christi Hospital St. Joseph for an examination. Two men, ages 26 and 24, have been identified as suspects in the case, Weible said, but no arrests have been made. The girl has been placed into protective custody by police.

“It’s too early to say whether this case is related to any trafficking issue, but that is something we’ll keep in mind,” Weible said.

Authorities have identified about seven other people they want to talk to in connection with the case, he said.
