More than two dozen Korean War veterans from Kansas will take part in an Honor Flight that leaves Wednesday to see war memorials and other sites in Washington, D.C.

Most of the 26 Korean War vets and 29 World War II vets will leave at 7:50 a.m. Wednesday on a flight out of Wichita Mid-Continent Airport and return at 8:30 p.m. Friday. The rest will fly out of Kansas City International.

This is the final Honor Flight this year.

It’s the first time a significant number of Korean War vets have joined the World War II veterans on the trip since the flights began out of Kansas in 2008, said Mike VanCampen, president of the Hutchinson-based Kansas Honor Flight.

VanCampen said World War II vets will likely make up a majority of those on the first flight in 2014, scheduled for sometime in April.

“We had about 10 or 12 World War II veterans who couldn’t make (Wednesday’s) flight for a number of different reasons,” he said.

More than 320 veterans have taken part in the flights over the past year.

Veterans interested in taking part in a flight should go to www.kansashonorflight.org or call 620-546-2400. There is no charge for veterans, although each vet must be accompanied by another person. Cost for that person is $700.

To help raise money for next year’s flights, a benefit dinner and show is planned for Nov. 9 at the Prairie Rose Chuckwagon Supper in Benton. Tickets are $30 and can be obtained by calling 316-778-2121. A silent auction also will be held.
