A 25-year-old woman was arrested after her young child was found wandering in the street in southeast Wichita and police found her passed out on her living room couch.

A neighbor at Buttonwood Tree Apartments called 911 at about 10:35 p.m. Sunday to report that a 4-year-old boy was wandering around the block and into the street near Harry and Cypress, crying and calling for his mother, Lt. Doug Nolte said Monday.

Officers responding to the report found the boy and began looking for his residence. They found an apartment with an open front door, Nolte said.

Inside, they found a woman passed out on the couch “due to drinking a large amount of alcohol,” Nolte said.

When she came to, she immediately started looking for her child. Officers discovered the woman had an outstanding warrant, so she was taken into custody for that as well as suspicion of child endangerment.

The boy was placed in the custody of other relatives.
