A 38-year-old man was killed Thursday afternoon in south Wichita when his motorcycle collided with a semi, police said.
The accident happened shortly after 1:30 p.m. at Mount Vernon and Pattie, just west of Southeast Boulevard. Wichita police Sgt. Kelly O’Brien said the semi was driving south on Pattie through a residential neighborhood and turning east onto Mount Vernon when a motorcycle collided with its trailer. The rider, a Wichita man, was westbound on Mount Vernon, he said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said. His name was not released, pending notification of family. The semi driver, a man in his mid-50s, is with a local company, O’Brien said. He did not know the semi’s departure location or destination.
O’Brien said a preliminary investigation indicates no one was impaired by drugs or alcohol. It’s unknown whether speed played a role in the crash, he said. An accident investigation unit remained at the scene Thursday afternoon, taking measurements, he said.
“We encourage people to be cautious of motorcycles on the street. Motorcycles are often more difficult to see” than other vehicles, O’Brien said.
“We also encourage motorcyclists to be defensive drivers.”
