A 5-year-old girl died Sunday in an early morning house fire in Kansas City, Kan., that also left a firefighter with second-degree burns to his face.
Fire crews arrived at the house in the 4600 block of Greeley Avenue around 4:15 a.m. and found heavy flames coming from the rear and center sections of the one-story dwelling.
A woman and a 7-year-old girl had escaped and were transported to a hospital for evaluation, a Fire Department spokesman said. The younger girl was found in or near a bedroom at the back of the house and was taken to the University of Kansas Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
The firefighter was injured while attempting to rescue the little girl.
The girl’s name and those of the other occupants were not released while officials notify relatives.
The cause of the fire was under investigation. According to the incident report, the house had no smoke detectors.
