A young man was hit and killed by a train early Saturday morning near the east side of the fairgrounds in Winfield, Winfield police reported.

The Winfield Fire Department found a body near the railroad tracks near West 14th Street about 4:05 a.m. Saturday after receiving a report of a train-pedestrian accident, police Capt. Brett Stone said in a release.

The man was over 18 years old, a police dispatch supervisor, but his exact age was not available.

Law enforcement officers spent several hours at the scene investigating, Stone’s release said, adding that the incident remains under investigation, and more information may be released early next week.

The Walnut Valley Festival — aka the Winfield bluegrass festival — is going on at the fairgrounds this weekend.
