Do you want to get to know your neighbors? A good opportunity is around the corner.

Celebrate Safe Communities will be held Oct. 1. Think of it as block parties breaking out all over Wichita.

The sign-up deadline is Wednesday, and police officials want as many blocks to participate as possible.

“It’s just about knowing each other … knowing your neighbors,” Wichita police Capt. Nelson Mosley said.

Once people get to know their neighbors, he said, they tend to look out for each other. That’s an important way to keep crime to a minimum in neighborhoods.

More than 100 block parties were held during last year’s inaugural event, which replaced the National Night Out gatherings in August. The new date does not conflict with primary elections and escapes the summer heat. It also coincides with Crime Prevention Month.

So far, Mosley said, only about 20 blocks have registered for this year’s event.

To sign up, people can go to, click on the “police” option under the departments section of the government tab and fill out the e-form found there. Or they can call 316-268-4165.
