The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has launched an investigation following the weekend arrest of the Hamilton County sheriff.
Richard Garza was arrested on suspicion of one count of aggravated assault early Sunday morning in Syracuse, the Syracuse Journal reported. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday.
The Greeley County sheriff was contacted once the responding deputy determined Garza was involved and no emergency services were needed, the Journal reported. Garza placed himself on administrative suspension pending the outcome of an investigation.
Undersheriff Nicholas Krug is the acting sheriff in this sparsely populated county west of Garden City and on the Colorado border.
Hamilton County Attorney Rob Gale requested a special prosecutor, according to a statement released by the KBI, and Scott County Attorney John Shirley has been appointed to handle the case.
