A resident allegedly has been stealing electricity from Westar Energy worth as much as $8,000 over the past seven years, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

The company reported that a person living in the 200 block of East 85th Street South had stolen the electricity, by tampering with an electrical meter, between November 2006 and Sept. 3 of this year, the Sheriff’s Office said.

“Deputies went to the address and found that a hole had been drilled in the meter and a wire inserted to stop the meter from running,” the office said.

Sheriff’s Lt. David Mattingly commented to reporters: “I didn’t know you could that to a meter.”

There has been no arrest, and the case remains under investigation, Mattingly said.
