Two Dodge City men were killed Monday morning in a three-vehicle accident about 10 miles west of Cimarron in Gray County, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol accident report.

Cesar Bautista-Cruz, 20, was driving a pickup west on U.S. 50 shortly after 6 a.m. when he improperly passed a car that had slowed to make a left-hand turn, according to the report.

An eastbound semi truck swerved to miss the pickup and the car, but the semi and the pickup collided nearly head-on, the report said.

Bautista-Cruz and his passenger, Jeremiah A. Lee, 22, were taken to a Dodge City hospital, where they later died Monday morning, according to the highway patrol.

The semi driver, Jose F. Lamota, 44, of Garden City, was injured and taken to a Garden City hospital. His condition was unknown. The car’s driver, Jose Saldana-Nava, 21, of Buffalo, Okla., was not injured.

The accident caused U.S. 50 to be closed between Cimarron and Garden City until early afternoon, according to state highway officials.
