Four young children were placed in protective custody by police Thursday morning after they were found walking home from a nearby store, authorities said.

A neighbor called police at about 10 a.m. Thursday when she spotted the children – girls ages 4 and 9 and boys ages 5 and 7 – walking in the street, said Lt. Jeff Weible of the Exploited and Missing Child Unit.

Officers found the children in the 1000 block of West Maple, who told them they were walking home from the store, Weible said. They live just east of Seneca in west Wichita.

The children told the officers that their father was at work and their mother had left with a friend, Weible said. They were taken to the Wichita Children’s Home.

No arrests have been made, Weible said. The case remains under investigation.
