Wichita police are still sorting out who fired the shots that wounded two men during a clash between rival gangs on the outdoor basketball courts at the Boys & Girls Club in northeast Wichita on Sunday night.

A 20-year-old man was shot in the back and underwent surgery at a local hospital, Wichita police Lt. Randy Reynolds said, while an 18-year-old man was later brought to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg. He was treated and released. The older victim was listed in critical condition on Monday afternoon.

The shooting, which occurred at about 8:30 p.m. in the 2400 block of Opportunity Drive, near 21st and Grove, was the culmination of a dispute that escalated after members of one gang showed up at the court only to discover members of a rival gang already there, Reynolds said.

“Some mean looks were exchanged between the two groups, which led to the argument which led to the shooting,” Reynolds said.

About 20 people were present at the time of the shooting, he said. Numerous shots were fired.

At this point, he added, it looks like one or more members of the same gang fired at the second group. There was not an exchange of gunfire between the two gangs.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance camera footage for clues to the identity of the shooters.

“We’ve had a spike in gang-related activity,” Reynolds said. “These two groups, as well as others, have been involved in altercations.”

While there have been “a few” gang-related incidents at the Boys and Girls Club in recent memory, Lt. Scott Heimerman said, it hasn’t been enough for authorities to express concern to officials at the organization.
