A Kansas City man was charged Saturday with killing his 78-year-old mother at their home in eastern Kansas City.

Jackson County prosecutors allege that Richard A. Ohearn, 58, shot Nancy Ohearn late Friday night at the residence in the 12100 block of E. 46th Street. He was charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action.

Richard Ohearn called 911 to report the shooting and answered the door when police arrived, authorities said.

A relative later told police that when he dropped Nancy Ohearn off at the house Friday night, her son was upset and appeared to have been drinking, according to court documents filed in the case. The relative said that Richard Ohearn blamed his mother “for everything that is wrong with his life” and had threatened to kill her in the past, according to the documents.
