Wichita police arrested nine women Thursday in a prostitution sting along north and south Broadway.
Lt. Doug Nolte said the department usually carries out operations such as the one on Thursday after it has received complaints from businesses and residents. Patrol and undercover officers were involved in the sting operation.
The women ranged in age from 28 to 52.
Sgt. Travis Rakestraw with Patrol North, which ran the operation, said the prevalence of street-level prostitution “occurs along the Broadway corridor.” He said a lot of the prostitution they see there “isn’t real organized,” and the women are usually working for themselves. In addition to making the arrests, police try to find out why the women are involved.
“Sometimes it’s substance abuse problems or a lack of money,” Rakestraw said. “If they’re willing to talk to us and ask for help, we look for ways we can help them.”
