A crew from Wichita’s flood control department fished more than 100 tires out of the banks of the Arkansas River near the 47th Street Bridge recently.
Sedgwick County Commission Chairman Jim Skelton said he had received complaints from board members of the Oaklawn Improvement District about tires that had been dumped near the river on either side of the bridge. He alerted the county’s public works director, David Spears, who contacted the city.
Crews removed the tires in June.
“It is so unfortunate that people have such disrespect … for our environment,” Skelton said in an e-mail.
