Alert witnesses helped police catch a burglar in downtown Wichita early Tuesday morning, authorities said.
Two people happened to notice a man use a large piece of concrete to break the glass in the front door of Mead’s Corner, 430 E. Douglas, at about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday, Lt. Doug Nolte said. They called 911 to report the break-in, and continued to watch as the man later left the store and walked away.
Officers responding to the burglary spotted a 55-year-old man who fit the description given by the witnesses and arrested him in the 200 block of North Mead.
“He went through the business and moved several things around,” Nolte said of the suspect, but nothing was apparently taken.
Nolte lauded the witnesses who called 911 and kept authorities updated as the burglary was happening.
“This is exactly the kind of thing we like to see from citizens — keeping an eye on him so we could catch him,” he said.
They did it without “getting into the middle of things,” he said. That keeps them safe while still providing important information, he said.
