A 60-year-old man incarcerated in the Sedgwick County Jail died early Monday morning, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office announced.
A medical emergency was declared at 12:17 a.m. Monday for an inmate in a one-person cell, Sheriff Jeff Easter said in a prepared statement. The inmate was transported to a local hospital, where he died at 2:41 a.m.
The inmate was jailed on June 27 on bench warrants issued by the city of Wichita, Easter said.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Sheriff’s Office detectives were notified, in accordance with established policy. An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted later Monday.
The inmate’s identity is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin, Easter said.
This is the first death in custody this year, Easter said. There were two suicides and three natural deaths of inmates in custody last year.
