Former Royals outfielder Jeff Francoeur is headed to the San Francisco Giants on a minor-league deal. Plans call for him to report initially to the Giants’ Class AAA Fresno affiliate to get some playing time in left field.
Francoeur has played just two major-league games in left field throughout his nine-year career, but the Giants don’t want to move Hunter Pence out of right field.
Financial details aren’t yet known, but the Giants are likely to pay only a pro-rated share of the major-league minimum. If so, the Royals remain obligated for the remaining balance of Francoeur’s $6.75 million salary.
Francoeur, 29, became a free agent when released last Friday after clearing waivers. He was batting .208 with a .249 on-base percentage, three homers and 13 RBIs in 59 games.
