A 20-year-old Wichita man has been jailed on suspicion of having sex with an underage girl from Wellington, police said.
The two have been communicating online, said Lt. Jeff Weible of the Wichita-Sedgwick County Exploited and Missing Child Unit. The man drove to Wellington to pick the 12-year-old girl up and brought her back to Wichita to have sex, Weible said.
Wellington police were notified when she returned home on Saturday morning, Weible said, and authorities there in turn alerted Wichita police. The suspect was pulled over in Sedgwick County, taken in for questioning and then booked into jail on suspicion of two counts of rape of a child 13 or under.
From what investigators learned, Weible said, “there’s little doubt that the suspect would not know that the victim is under the age of consent,” which is 16.
Under Kansas law, sex with someone 13 or under is considered rape even if it is consensual.
