The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office has opened a criminal investigation of a deputy at the county jail, authorities said Wednesday.
Detectives began the investigation June 10 after they learned of a possible criminal incident involving the deputy and an inmate, Sheriff Jeff Easter said Wednesday. The detectives are working with the district attorney’s office on the investigation.
If the district attorney decides to bring charges against the deputy, those charges will be announced when the investigation concludes, Easter said. He said detectives still have to interview several witnesses.
The inmate did not report the incident, Easter said. Rather, the investigation resulted from “what we saw inside the jail,” Easter said.

The deputy under investigation is still working at the jail, although he is on restricted duty and does not have contact with inmates, Easter said.
Because the investigation is ongoing, Easter said he could not provide any details about the nature of the incident.
