Two children were taken into protective custody Friday night by Wichita police after the older child and his mother couldn’t explain severe burns to the child’s feet, police said.

The incident began around 10 p.m. Friday when a 37-year-old woman brought her 12-year-old son to Via Christi Hospital on East Harry with significant burns to his feet, Police Sgt. Bruce Watts said.

“When officers got there they got several different stories,” Watts said. “The 12-year-old couldn’t remember how he got the burns on his feet, and they were pretty substantial burns. He stepped on a light bulb was one of the stories and he stepped on the faucet in the shower. It went on and on and on, so eventually the officers decided to take the kids into custody. Nobody could seem to remember how it happened.”

Police also took a 1-year-old boy into custody at the hospital, Watts said.
