American Red Cross provides fans to battle heat

The Midway Kansas chapter of the American Red Cross gave away nearly 300 fans on Tuesday, the first day of its fan distribution week.

The Midway Kansas chapter of the American Red Cross gave away nearly 300 fans on Tuesday, the first day of its fan distribution week.

The fans will continue to be distributed over the next few days, according to Bev Morlan, the chapter’s executive director.

In order to receive a fan, people need to apply in person at the chapter office, 1900 E. Douglas, between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. They also need to bring a valid Kansas driver’s license and proof of current address, such as a utility bill. Only one fan per household will be given away, Morlan said.

“It is really a short, easy application process and then, they are able to take the fan with them,” she said.

Morlan said the chapter has 1,000 fans to give away, and this week marks the chapter’s last distribution for the summer.

She encouraged people who would like to give to the program to make financial donations, which could benefit not only the fan distribution program but also other Red Cross programs.

In the past, sometimes people donated fans to the program – but no longer.

“We would get variations in quality and size,” she said.

“This provides more equitable fans for more people. We’re encouraging people to give in more unrestricted ways.”
