Wichita police said Monday that two teenagers have been arrested in a case involving the sexual assault of a 76-year-old woman.
The woman woke up to the sound of two male intruders, who kicked in a door at her house near Lincoln and George Washington Boulevard at about 5 a.m. Friday. At least one of the intruders was armed with a gun, police said.
After one of the intruders raped the woman, the two left with a couple of televisions and jewelry, the value of which was unavailable Monday, police said.
Police found the two suspects, ages 17 and 18, at a house in the 2400 block of East Mesita, less than three blocks away. They were arrested about 6 a.m. Friday.
The house is owned by a 22-year-old woman, thought to be the girlfriend of the 18-year-old, police said. Some of the stolen property was recovered from the house, where the owner was arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting a felon.
The teenagers were arrested on suspicion of forcible rape, aggravated burglary and robbery. Charges are expected to be filed Tuesday, police said.
Wichita police Lt. Randy Reynolds, supervisor of the sex crimes division, said he does not think the two teenagers knew the victim.
“She had some physical injuries, but most of her injuries are obviously emotional,” Reynolds said Monday.
He said the woman’s husband had recently died, so she was living alone.
“Any sexual assault is disturbing, but it goes up to the next level when you victimize someone who’s 76 years of age,” Reynolds said.
