Letter carriers in Wichita collected 142,000 pounds of non-perishable food on Saturday to help the poor this summer, a Kansas Food Bank official said.
That’s down from about 157,000 pounds collected last year, but still good, said Larry Gunkel, a Food Bank official and former letter carrier.
Wichita residents were asked to put non-perishable food items beside their mailboxes on Saturday. Letter carriers picked up the items.
The food will be used to help the needy in Wichita this summer, including helping feed children who will not get school lunches, Gunkel has said.
