A farmer found a body in a cotton field he leases in southeast Sedgwick County early Wednesday morning, authorities said.
The body, which is male, was discovered at about 7:30 a.m. in the 2600 block of South 127th Street East, Sedgwick County sheriff’s Lt. David Mattingly said. The nearest cross street is Pawnee.
“We don’t have an approximate age or race,” Mattingly said. “We are working it as a suspicious death.”
Asked whether the case appears to be a homicide, Mattingly said “It could be.”

The body was found about 100 yards from the nearest road. An autopsy began early Wednesday afternoon, Mattingly said, and investigators are waiting for results to provide more clues.
Investigators aren’t sure how long the body had been in the field, he said, though it had clearly been there longer than just overnight.
Deputies are checking missing person cases in Wichita and the surrounding suburbs to see if the body might be that of someone on those lists, Mattingly said.
